The pages are filled with family secrets, family devotion, and the devastating fallout for all involved when certain truths become known. It is a moving and emotional novel about love, loss, truth, lies, family, friendship, birth, and rebirth. It is a beautifully written story of love and loss and everything in-between.

The stories, the characters, everything is so well developed and intriguing. This book would be a good read during a long plane ride, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, or at the beach. It was not very complex or difficult to comprehend, and it was a quick read. Claire Appleton, begs Althea, and hometown these are the prominent characters of this novel. Fifteen years after she swore never to set foot in Ashwell again, Althea Gardner is brought back to her hometown by the suicide of her high school best friend, Claire Appleton.

Beatrix, Claire’s grief-stricken mother and now the last surviving member of the Appleton clan, begs Althea to stay with her at Appleton Hill. Nursing her own broken heart, Althea ends up as a guest in this vast and isolated property filled with the shadows of people that no longer walk this earth.

As the days go by, the locals’ suspicions about Claire’s death create doubts in Althea’s own mind, causing her to launch a discreet investigation. But when she wakes up each morning bearing a fresh wound on her body, instead of running away, she develops an insatiable craving to learn more about the Appleton family’s dark history.
