Chesterton casts his Catholic eye back upon English history as England struggled with the crises made manifest in WWI. He finds sadly an absence of awareness of what was lost as European Christendom was laundered apart into nation states and Catholic civilization splintered into Protestant and anti-Reformation camps. The great tragedy as he sees it is the loss of the common human face and human heart of medieval society, a loss of a common and specifically Christian social organization that held a different promise for human interaction than the path followed in how England emerged from the Middle Ages. He places his hopes for England’s future in her common men, not in her best or brightest aristocrats or meritocrats.
